Not long into the research for my book about medical
marijuana, an industry that is sweeping my home state of Colorado as never
before, a Congressional candidate I know from his time on Fort Collins’ City
Council cornered me in a local coffee shop. He’s a rather boilerplate
Republican, a military veteran who’s conservative on social and fiscal issues.
He follows the party line on immigration, taxes and sounding the call for less
government regulation of business. But he didn’t know wh... Continue reading ...

Guest post by Jill Rothenberg
I could barely move from my prone position on the bed, my
head pounding and my stomach awash with that telltale queasiness that meant one
thing: I was in for a hangover from hell. The room was dark, the TV was on low
and there was the glow of a lit cigarette from the other bed. As my eyes
adjusted to the dark, I saw a bare-chested guy in jeans, lying on his back,
blowing smoke up at the ceiling. He turned to look at me. I had a vague memory
of being carried up... Continue reading ...
'Brownie madness' strikes in Colorado
Posted by Greg Campell on Wednesday, February 16, 2011,
In my freezer is a Ziploc bag of pot brownies that are about a year old and which will probably never be eaten. I made them myself, following a recipe on YouTube, but I screwed them up badly … infusing marijuana’s active ingredient, THC, into cooking oil is a lot harder than I had expected. If you heat it too much before dumping in your weed and sautéing for 20 minutes, your house will fill with black smoke that smells like you’re sacrificing Rastafarians. The resulting brownies wo... It's time to start calling them "blood diamonds" again
Posted by Greg Campell on Wednesday, February 9, 2011,

Every Valentine’s Day, I’m asked if it’s safe to buy
diamonds again. Whether or not the person asking will be happy with the answer depends
entirely on their gender — the gender that pays
for diamond rings, necklaces and earrings always wants to hear that the
situation is worse than ever so they can get away with buying an opal, while
the gender that receives them wants to hear that everything is puppies and
butterflies in the diamond industry.
As ever, the truth is always more ... Continue reading ...
We interrupt our regularly scheduled program ...

Ah, the joys of
home ownership in Colorado, which are not quite the same joys as
elsewhere in the country. Springtime brings Biblical swarms of miller
moths that, should you leave the porch light burning overnight, will
find their way into the space between your front and screen doors and
those that don’t die in piles as deep as snowdrifts somehow make it into
the kitchen cabinets. Summertime is majestic, but it can swelter and
buckle your shingles and, in my neighborhood at least, t... Continue reading ...
